font-family: trebuchet ms;">Exams have finished and summer holidays are here. There is so much to do in the holidays. We are so blessed that we have opportunity to spend time in Saadh Sangat and be inspired by Gurmat. There are two camps which I personally recommend to everyone over 16 years old to attend this summer - in July there is Boss Sikhi Camp and in August there is Khalsa Camp. These two camps are great places to learn about Sikhi, share pyaar for Guru Jee and enjoy the bliss of Saadh Sangat.

If you haven't already applied, then best to get in your applications early.

Boss Sikhi Camp 2006 - 24th to 29th July
More info @ www.SikhiCamp.com

Khalsa Camp 2006 - 20th to 25th August
More info @ www.KhalsaCamp.com

ਸਰਨਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਵਉ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਿਰਪਾਨਦ ॥
saran saran saran prabh paavo, deejai saaDhsangat kirpaanad.
O God, I seek Your Sanctuary, Your Sanctuary, Your Sanctuary;

The British Organisation of Sikh Students is holding its annual summer Sikhi Camp from the 24th – 29th July, 2006. Sikhi camp has been a constant source of inspiration for young Sikhs since it started 10 years ago. The camp provides a chance to meet young Sikhs from all over the UK and Europe and experience Sikhi. The organisers describe the camp as a “residential action packed 6 days aiming to create an environment that is unlike anything else out there.”

Sikhi Camp 2006 will be marking the 400th anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji's Shaheedi (martyrdom) to uphold the ideals of truth, freedom and justice, as well as a number of other historical milestones. The camp features excellent talks, small group discussions, kirtan darbars with English katha (explanations) of Gurbani, action packed outdoor activities all set out in the beautiful countryside.

Every Sikh is proud of their heritage and wants to learn more about the works and basic teachings of our great Gurus, however many young people dread being looked down upon or being preached at. Sikhi Camp like other Gurmat camps for students is far from it. One camper described, “I was scared at first because I have never been to camp before and I cut my hair. However, staying a week at the camp changed my perspective and I am so glad that I went. People were so friendly; I learnt lots, made many friends and had an enjoyable week. I now understand and respect those who follow the Guru’s Path and hope one day I walk in the same direction.”

So who can attend Sikhi Camp? It’s for anyone over 16 years old who is interested in learning the basics about Sikhi in a friendly, relaxed and non-judgemental environment. It doesn't matter how religious one is. It's all about how keen you are to learn. “Everyone is Welcome!” It’s only £55 for 6 days in the British countryside with the benefit of loads of fun activities, inspirational talks and discussions. There is a £5 discount for applications received 30th May 2006.

One camp sewadar said, “The six day Sikhi Camp is amazing if you really want to know what it’s like though, rather than just read about it on websites, or hear about it from your friends, go and find out for yourself, and experience for your self the Vibe at Sikhi Camp.”

For more information or to download an application form then please visit:
www.SikhiCamp.org

Events for May - August 2006

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa,
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Exams are almost over for most people and summer holidays begin!

There are lots of things happening, so please make sure you participate and enjoy the events! He also wanted us to be physically fit and have a disciplined life and Hola can be taken as a symbol or a day, which would remind us that Sikhs need to be physically fit also.

Also, Guru Patshaah wanted us to seek for active forms of entertainment. When one is involved in horsemanship, soldiery, swordsmanship and archery or any other form of sport of today we are actively involved in it as against the passive forms of entertainment like watching television, playing computer games and so on and so forth.

Physical fitness flows from discipline skills. These skills include the ability to organize our life to meet our basic needs adequately, rest, diet, health, hygiene, exercise, reading, prayer, etc. It will help if we draw up an action programme for the acquisition of self-discipline skills. Two important moments of the day are when we get up in the morning and when we go to sleep. In the morning, when we are fresh from sleep, we can resolve to practice this self-discipline and at night we can ask ourselves an account of how have we practised them. Then we may resolve for the following day and go on disciplining ourselves.

Of course, some of you who are reading this are already doing all these because you are at a higher level of functioning and are trying to actualize your potential but this is just a humble effort to share some of my views with all of you.

For Sikhs this is what HOLA day signifies, to make our self externally and internally strong and not by merely wasting our life and doing the things blindly what others do that bear no fruits.
So, let all of us try to be Victorious by overcoming our evils, our own enemies Kaam, Krodh, Lob, Moh & Aanhkar.

|| kaam kroDh lobh moh jeetahu aisee khayl har pi-aaree|| (Ang 1185 SGGS)
Conquer sexual desire, anger, greed and worldly attachment; only such a game as this is dear to the Lord.

|| janam padaarath jin chali-aa naanak aa-i-aa so parvaan thi-aa. || (Ang 1007 SGGS)
Those who depart after having been victorious in this priceless human life - O Nanak, their coming into the world is approved.

www.DiscoverSikhi.com

Sikh Youth Conference 06

Event Title: Sikhs in the UK: FACT FICTION AND FUTURE
Event Owner: sikh soc
Event Date: April 5, 2006
Event Type: Single Day Event
Event Post:
Sikhs in the UK: FACT FICTION AND FUTURE

       Conference 2006

The Sikh Human Rights Group (SHRG) and the British Organisation of Sikh Students (BOSS) present a one day conference on issues affecting the Sikhs in the United Kingdom. There are a number of means of getting from these airports to Imperial College, including suburban trains, underground trains (the Tube) and buses. Taxis are another, but more expensive option.
Express shuttle trains run from the major London airports into the capital's mainline railway stations.
The Stansted Express runs into Liverpool Street Station, the Heathrow Express terminates at London Paddington Station whilst the Gatwick Express terminates at London Victoria Station. In each case take the Circle Line Underground to South Kensington. It is also possible to take the District Line from Paddington and Victoria Stations but not from Liverpool Street.
Thameslink Railways also run trains from Gatwick Airport (cheaper than the Express) and you simply get off at Blackfriars Station and take the Circle or District Underground Lines (west) to South Kensington Tube Station.

The Piccadilly Underground Line (around 50 minutes) offers one of the cheapest routes into London from Heathrow Airport and goes direct to South Kensington.
Buses run from the airports into Victoria Coach Station, across the road from Victoria Railway Station. Take the Circle or District Line just two stops west from there to South Kensington or take a taxi.
To get to Imperial College from the tube station see below.
       Arriving by Train
Details of routes, timetables as well as online ticket purchasing are located via the UK Railways on the Net and National Rail websites. The National Rail site is arguably more comprehensive with links to several different sites for timetables, booking and useful travel link information. Most of the relevant rail stations are conveniently on the Circle or District Lines but from Waterloo Station take the Jubilee Line one stop north to Westminster and then the Circle or District Lines four stops west to South Kensington.
       Arriving by Bus
National Express operate a network of buses between all major cities in Great Britain and information on the bus network, including timetables and online booking facilities are available at the National Express website (or telephone +44-(0)875 808080).
       Getting around London
The easiest way to get around London is via the extensive London Underground system, but there are also extensive bus services to all parts of London. Pick up information and route maps at the Underground Stations or at Imperial College reception.
       Imperial College Campus
The Symposium will be held at the South Kensington Campus of Imperial College. A map showing the location of the campus in South Kensington is available here.
The meeting will take place in the Sir Alexander Fleming Building (No. 5 on the Campus map). Registration will take place at the conference desk immediately outside the lecture theatre from 10:30am on Wednesday 5th April 2006. The conference desk will be open for the duration.

London Sikhi Week 2

London Sikhi Week 2
1st March - 8th March 2006
Various
It's that time of year once again for a week long of inspiring, intellectual, active and most importantly fun talks, discussions, workshops and Keertan. The paper claims the situation is "crazy" compared to the fact that Sikhs are allowed to wear Kirpans to the same school. Then it has a picture of a large 2-3ft kirpan. The front page is very sensationalist to outrage as much as possible. The article is continued on page 7 of the paper, with another picture of the necklace and the big kirpan next to it.

Following the article, BOSS Representative/ London Co-ordinators, sent out a letter on behalf of London and Home Counties Sikh Societies to the Daily Express. We have only just celebrated the 300th tricentenary of the Khalsa Panth as well as the 400th anniversary of the Parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji being our ONE AND ONLY TRUE GURU JI. We do not follow any living, self-proclaimed fake Guru/Gurus.

This meditation/path is being commemorated because it has been 301 years since these great young souls sacrificed their lives so that anyone may choose their own denomination (faith/religion).

The Sahibzade were offered bribes of immense money and wealth, and even though they were at a young age, attempts were made to seduce them with beautiful women from across the Islamic nation in exchange to renounce Sikhi and convert to Islam. They profoundly refused each and every bribe that was offered to them. Suffering the consequences of trials and attempts of humiliation, as well as the most barbaric, unimaginable, physical and mental torture and finally being sentenced to death by being bricked alive. Remember your meditation/path is being done in their honour.

The pages of Sikh history are showered with numerous shaheeds such as Guru Angad Dev Ji, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Mata Gujri Ji. There was also the Great Holocaust (Wadda Ghalughara) on 5th February 1762 where between 20,000 and 30,000 Sikh men, women and children were slaughtered in a massacre. Recent times to date include the horrific massacre attempt to ethnically cleanse Sikhs from Hindustan in 1984 by the tyrant evil hell-bent president of the Indian Government Indira Gandhi.

Your Sewa is…

1) To read 108 Japji Sahibs within a period time of 40 days. This will be done in your leisure. However, if possible try to follow this format best as possible:

- 1 in the morning
- 1 in the evening
- 1 before sleeping

Please note this is only a rough guide and that this meditation/path can be done as is convenient to you.

2) The first time you start your path/meditation, it is essential that you take a full shower/bath; this includes washing your hair and full body.

3) Throughout the 40-day period, you are required to shower daily (it is your own prerogative whether you wish to have a full shower/bath or just a body wash). If you are going to be completing a path later on in the day, it is not necessary to have another shower/bath as long as you have had your morning shower/bath.

4) Wherever possible try to wear clean clothes when reading your meditation/path.

5) Every time you meditate, it is essential that you cover your hair.

6) You do not have to complete the Japji Sahib path in one sitting. You can read it ending on a pauri, and then restart from that pauri later on.

7) You will be provided with a calendar to mark off the days. Also on the calendar there will be a tick chart. On completion of a Japji Sahib you can mark this off enabling you to know how many paths you have completed and how much time you have left.

8) As a rough guide you should be completing between 16 and 18 Japji Sahibs meditation/paths per week or 2 - 2 ½ (20 pauris) daily.

9) Catch up sessions will be done once a week during this 40-day period. These Catch up sessions will take place at Gurdwaras around the UK (please refer to website to find nearest Gurdwara, dates and times).

Locations and Dates

Start Date: Thursday 17th November 5.30pm sharp.

Location:
Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara,
Sedgley Street/ Duncan Street,
Wolverhampton,
WV2 3AJ
UK

Telephone no. 01902 459413/ 458877

Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara
Akhand Jap of Japji Sahib
Start Date: Saturday 24th December start of Akhand Jap of Japji Sahib.

Bhog Date: Monday 26th December bhog of Akhand Jap of Japji Sahib followed by Rhensabhai.

Guru Nanak Sikh Temple.
Sedgley Street off Dudley Road,
Wolverhampton,
West Midlands.
WV2 3AJ
Tel: 01902 459413.

Bus Routes:
Buses from Wolverhampton City Centre are: 526, 541, 641

Nearest Coach Station and Train Station is Wolverhampton City Centre and both are close to the Bus Station.

Contact Information for Sewadars

For any queries or further information required, please contact the sewadars below.

For more inforamtion please contact email: info@jap108.co.uk or sikhsoc@gmail.com
